I legit never imagined I’d see another expansion for this game. I say expansion because we didn’t call the others DLC back then.

I’m curious what you mean by this. Did you think last October’s The Mountain Royals was going to be the last expansion? How come? Or do you consider it more of a “DLC” for some reason? Personally I’d call it more of ak expansion than this one, since it came with both new civs and campaigns.

Or did you miss some of the earlier expansions? In which case I’m curious about which is the last one you heard of.

Oh, I mean the OG expansion “The Conquerors”. As far as I know that content is just included in the Definitive Edition now. But back in the day, it was the AOEII expansion.

AFAIK all the other DLC came after the Definitive edition re-release. My original point is that I didn’t expect new expansions to what is ultimately a 90s game.

There were some expansions after the “HD” edition on Steam in 2013, namely: The Forgotten, African Kingdoms, and Rise of the Rajas. Then DE came out including everything that came before plus one new expansion. And since its release, it has had 6 expansions, one of which brought (in addition to a new civ, the Romans) the entire gameplay of Age of Empires 1 as a separate game-mode.

It’s pretty wonderful how much support we’re getting for such an old game. But at least to me—as someone who plays the game regularly and keeps up to date with its news—it’s not at all surprising.

I mean, I dont think it’s controversial to say it is surprising that a game had an expansion in 2000 but and then only had any other after the HD re-release in 2013. 13 years is an eternity in gaming. That’s my only point; I dont think it has anything to do with keeping “up to date”.

Yeah sure, but what’s not surprising is another expansion coming out in March 2024, given the history of the game between October 2013 and October 2023. This expansion is certainly surprising if you didn’t have all that history.
