Democrats have made restoring abortion access a cornerstone of their campaign for the White House and Congress, but there are divisions over what, exactly, that means.
Given the deplorable state of women’s health even before Roe was struck down, might be a good idea to go farther and throw out the Hyde Amendment while you’re at it. There’s no compelling reason to deny women access to contraception and termination as part of Medicaid, given that this was routinely available through private insurance for decades.
It isn’t enough. We need codified guarantees of an unalienable right to bodily autonomy for all citizens, with explicit statements clarifying that the people have a right to abortion and contraception so that courts can’t willfully misinterpret the law.
As a stepping stone to that goal reinstating roe is a good first step.
But also phrased in such a way that anti-vaxxers can’t hide behind some flimsy excuse and endanger us all
Add “if you want to put yourself at risk that’s cool. If you want to put your society at risk then you need to leave it. Deserters will receive one Coleman pup tent and water for 3 days. No weapons.”
It’s the first step, though.
Contentment with a first step results in it being the only step.
See: safe injection.
Perfect is the enemy of good.
If Democrats ever think of rising to the level of “acceptable” we’ll start talking about perfect and good.
Why in the gods damned fuck does congress get a say in my medical decisions‽ Especially considering they aren’t even paying for them.

Because keeping the filibuster around is a higher priority than human rights.
