I just gave it a listen today on my bike ride. It’s pretty good - not what I expected but not surprising, either. I’d characterize it as Kate Bush meets Dead Can Dance meets early ‘70s King Crimson, and since I like all three of those acts I like Gibbons’ album as well. I was surprised to see that it’s her first solo album.

“Baby’s Got a Temper” is also a banger, but it’s a bit of a tough sell when you’re singing about how great Rohypnol is.

This will be an incredibly dated reference, but back in the '80s there was a comic who would ask the crowd who the black girl in The Facts of Life (TV show) was and there’d be a chorus of people yelling “Tudy! Tudy! Tudy!” Then he’d ask who the secretary of defense was.

Fun killer bee fact: back in the '70s everybody (in the US) was worried about “killer bees” (aka Africanized bees) migrating northwards from Central America and killing tons of people because of their higher levels of aggression as compared to European bees. Turns out that if you take an Africanized queen and raise it in a temperate climate, the bees she produces are no more aggressive than European bees; likewise a European queen raised in a tropical climate will produce bees every bit as aggressive as Africanized bees. So the whole thing was just stupid bee racism all along.

So the bad news is that anthropomorphic global overheating (don’t give me that weak “climate change” formulation) is going to give us killer bees even without the migration of Africanized stock. The good news is that we’re completely fucked anyway and won’t give a shit about a few bee stings.

The year they both came out (1995) I was coding in Visual Basic 3. Ack.

My main experience using C++ was because I got stuck modifying an app written with Qt Creator, an utterly insane cross-platform framework that used (still uses? I dunno, only people in Finland ever used it in the first place) C++ for the under-the-hood processing and Javascript for the UI. For good measure, the application developers had modified all the C++ stuff with macros to the point where it was barely even recognizable as C++. Fortunately, it mattered not at all because the app’s customers were ISPs who just wanted a Skype clone so they could say they had one even though none of their customers ever used the damn thing.

The advantage of that particular flag is that there’s no way to hang it upside-down.
