In some ways, loss leading can be done in more or less ethical ways. For instance, a small mom n pop hardware loss leading on lumbar or hammers and taking a reasonable profit on ten penny nails. Or something, maybe a better example is the Costco 1.50 all beef foot-long dog and soda but their memberships are reasonable profit for those who would go often enough and buy enough to make it worth it. It’s late and I’m tired, I hope you get the general gist. But yes, doordash is just double-dipping on the sleazy. And maybe loss leading isn’t ever acceptable, but I’m simply unaware/haven’t thought of reasons that make it so. I’m willing to hear any argument against any of it, though.

That’s your takeaway? It’s like Walmart moving into a town and undercutting indie business prices until the indie businesses close, then raising prices.

What doordash is doing is scraping restaurants’ websites for prices, taking a temporary loss, then going to the restaurants saying, “We got all these orders, it’s a win for both of us!” to sell the contact, then raising prices and tacking on extra fees, making money off the restaurants and the customers

My best guess? A need to protect the image they’ve constructed to obscure the true self, which probably isn’t all that bad, in reality, but feels a misplaced need to compete with the images others have constructed that obscure their true selves. There’s a lot to be said for manners, but there’s a notable difference between authenticity and faux ego.

I’m in an online class now with an instructor who merely reads the chapter previously assigned as homework and won’t answer questions about anything other than their social activities. In an ivy League University area. Conversely an instructor in tiny little Katy, TX a couple of years ago and originally from Alabama gave plenty of homework, had well - planned classes, actually thoroughly explained independent reading material, and also could answer in-depth questions on an ELI 5 level. It’s more to do with personal ability, interest and integrity and actually caring about/liking the job.

It is until you realize (after a long adjustment period) that it’s pretty healthy, if you allow it to be.

There are definitely tradeoffs.

Boondoggles/prolifrigates proliferate, unfortunately.

Food and flower gardening, community or personal, waking, biking, swimming in rivers, fishing, sewing, knitting, getting to know your neighbors, barbecuing on wood or charcoal, building treehouses and swings, book clubs, picking up litter, mutual aid, sitting around and singing/playing instruments/swapping stories or making up tales to entertain children and each other, reading, pick up basketball/football/soccer/hackeysack, ride horses, hunt, fish, ride horses, dirt bikes, cards, dominoes, bird watching, butterfly watching. Board games, video games, potlucks. Plenty of stuff to do, it’s just usually a slower-paced activity.

I’d add corporate farms should not get subsidies.

Sounds about right for a Nazi like Ford. Dictating times for curtains to be drawn, coming to inspect your home, checking your back account… This is before social safety nets existed.
