Honestly, I would say a news agency like the Associated Press is really good for national and international news. I’ll say that I really like The Atlantic, but that’s more of a news magazine than a traditional newspaper. If you want a good mix with minimal sources, I would say Associated Press and The Guardian for national and international news; The Atlantic for political analysis; Mother Jones/ProPublica for investigative journalism; and a big newspaper in your state for statewide news (especially a major metropolitan area). Just off the top of my head, but those are ones I’d choose if I needed just a single source for those things.

If you want, I highly recommend creating an RSS feed for multiple sources. I only started using it in 2024, but it works great.

I know it’s easier if you try to classify things in terms of what you already understand, but you really shouldn’t try to shoehorn the political factions of other countries into Republicans vs Democrats. It’s really just going to impair your ability to actually understand what’s going on.

“Don’t walk on the grass” signs are usually stupid anyway because vast expanses of bare lawns with nothing but a single kind of mowed grass are almost exclusively dumber, uglier, and worse for the environment than native plants. (To actually answer your question, no, because speciesism is differential treatment without critical thought as to why they’re treated differently, and non-human animals can’t read are way cooler than humans tbh.)

Vegan here: hurting and killing innocent, defenseless animals for food because of speciesism is wrong and harmful.

I hate to tell you this, but there’s a neologism for exactly this kind of problem called citogenesis, and the Kansas City Star’s (the Freep is just republishing this) lack of a source here makes me worried that their source is basically just user-generated content they found online and thought looked plausible (this Fandom article proceeds that Star article by about 7 years, so at least it’s confirmed it wasn’t this one). There are numerous times when this has happened because of Wikipedia alone. For instance, a couple months ago, Rachael Lillis, the voice actress for Misty, died. Want to know what happened? The first outlets to report her death – effectively glorified blogs like CBR etc. – said she died at 46. Their source? In all likelihood, her IMDb page. This escalated up to more and more credible sources, and eventually, USA Today, BBC News, etc. all started reporting 46.

Well the NYT actually bothered to reach out to her family, and they confirmed she died at 55. CBC News independently reached out and also verified that age. Some outlets corrected their articles, but if you look up Rachael Lillis’ obituaries, you’ll find a good chunk of them still report her as having died at age 46.

That aside, my actual concern is echoed by @Chozo@fedia.io’s comment, namely that a Fandom article without a source is almost as good as worthless.

This list is just on a wiki with no sources, so unless the individual articles have that source, the source is as good as “I made it the fuck up”.

The OSI’s definition of open-source software is the de facto definition used by most people, and for most of the remaining people that don’t, they (mistakenly, because they define “free” software, not “open-source”) defer to the FSF’s defintion of free software.

So yes, you should be explicitly noting that what you define as “open” has nothing at all to do with the far-and-away most widely used definition(s) of “open-source”.

Go look at the principles of open-source or free software as defined either by the OSI and the FSF and then come back when you find the one that says that Linus needs to violate US sanctions to keep employees of Russian companies in trusted roles within his project.

Also, what does this have to do with being tankie or not? Modern Russia is very openly not communist.
