Piracy has always been a distribution issue. There are definitely greedy lazy people who will always want more for less, but the organized effort required for piracy only happens when fair access is impossible.

I’d say the specifications of the design should be made public domain after some time (say 5 years for high-tech and 10 otherwise) or if the OEM shuts down the factory.

It’s a bit unreasonable to keep parts in stock 50 years after the product was last sold, but if the designs are available any company can start a new run, or even just a guy with a nice shop. The big exception to this is silicon chips, there are only a few companies that can even make integrated circuits, let alone processors. Public access to designs might encourage competition though…

And buying that requires knowledge of amazon, knowledge of what phone is useful, knowledge to avoid a scam or faulty product, an email address, a credit card, and a device to order from.

Children are surprisingly clever and have all the time in the world, but they aren’t professional pen-testers and don’t have the experience needed to use online services before having access to them.

Boost is fantastic for keeping my place. I just don’t have to worry about switching to the web to look something up, or even just to do some math. Even if the app gets killed in the background, you’ll be returned to where you were. It’s great, I wish every app could have such a good memory.

I’m a little disappointed that it was a medical term at all. It’s a very functional word, like in flame retardant, or an engine retarder.

I think it would have been much more applicable to methods of thinking and epistemology, like thought stopping techniques and special pleading, as these also severly restrict one’s critical thought yet can be overcome socially. There’s no sense having a social label for a medical condition, so don’t use such a punchy easy to use word for it if it’s not a choice.

I agree that the vast majority of ads are manipulative, but are there not legitimate uses in notification? Like posters annoucing an event, requests for scientific trials, or even lost posters.

It’s not bad for hyper local news via groups.

That being said, anyone that trusts a social media platform as a source of media probably doesn’t use it as a source, but instead just assumes that it’s fully representative. Like when some people dismiss tik-tok because they only see people twerking, they assume it’s representitive of the whole platform.

Debates and actually adressing the problems.

You can’t say “Party X just wants your money”, try “Our party will help you keep your money”, or even “Unlike some parties today, we will put your taxes to good use”.

It’s a lot harder to make a compelling attack without a concrete focus. “Some parties are corrupt” is so trivially true that’s it embarassing, but “Party X is corrupt” is a rallying cry.

It won’t prevent lies by any means, but since specific claims can only be nade about your own party it gives an advantage to talking about your own party instead of every ad being incredibly negative claims one step off of a flame war. Hopefully that leads to building a strong case and then defending that case during debates, but at least the ads will have less direct negativity.

I personally think it’s just fine if you forget it’s about time shenanigans and forget anything ever mentioned in a modern physics paper.

I get much of my enjoyment out of doing the opposite; pushing the narrative with “what-ifs” and seeing how far I can twist my understanding of reality to make the story plausible, so I very much didn’t have a good time.

This is most of my memory of Canadian elections too. I wish even mentioning other parties wasn’t allowed in campagin material, like how in some parts of government politicians can only refer to each other by title and not by name.

Hmm, when people say “stop buying AAA games” it’s usually a sentiment similar to “stop preordering games”. A purchase long after release and at a heavy discount isn’t really economically relevant, especially after the next product has been out for several years.

When you said you let a AAA game in occassionally, it seemed like you were saying you bought something like GoT when it released on your platform, and that people will continue to do that. Saying that people need to stop buying AAA games is about forcing AAA studios to change, and to stop allowing them to clown around. If everyone stopped buying AAA games on release year, that’s already 90% as effective as ignoring the bargin bin sales too.

So maybe you were speaking for me, but I think you did that poorly. The purchases that allow AAA studios to continue being dickwads are about as far removed from my purchases as you can get without learning how to hoist a sail, and even those up for consideration are eliminated 9 times out of 10. Trying to accuse me of funding the race-to-the-bottom enshitification is missing the mark.

Dude, speak for yourself, the last AAA title I bought was MH:W at massive discout many years after the next iteration released. I’ve never even considered a AAA title that wasn’t several years old already, that have had plenty of time to show exactly how scummy they are.
