Yes, canonical provides both. Guess what? They screwed up, and introduced several vulnerabilities, and you ended up with both a snap and apt installed docker.

The fact that they are both packaged by Canonical is both irrelevant and a perfect example of the problem.

One selects a different package, same source repo.

The other completely changes the installation, invisibly to the user, potentially introducing vulnerabilities.

You can say no, but if they pull in some other reason (such as dogs) to give them a meaningful excuse, they now have probable cause for the search.

Anything is now 100% admissible, you can sue but its not going anywhere, and they can still get away with planting evidence because they came up with whatever probable cause necessary to perform the search anyway.

Get a dash cam, front and rear ideally, which also grabs the interior. You do not need to notify police that they are on camera, while in uniform they are public personnel and are not subject to any expectation of privacy while carrying out their “duty”. But it may be good to mention you have a camera in there, and no, you will not turn it off.

If you do a hypervisor like proxmox, then throw your NVR in a VM, you can just create a couple of virtual NICs (though you’ll be back at that FW issue I’m sure).

USB NICs are pretty well supported these days though, and cheap to boot. Just need to be certain you’ve got usb3 if you want to make use of that gig though!

I’ve got a few pi-a-likes that I’m doing similar camera fun with, though using some webcams in there and a 3d printed case. At least that way they match my diy temp sensors with esp32s!

Dual nic NVR then? You could even just throw a simple switch with no uplink (but preferably managed so you can tag the traffic) and for extra safety just allow only the LAN traffic you want on the NIC/Port connected to your regular LAN from the NVR.

If you want ONVIF, be sure to check the specs, many cheaper models drop support, but not all.

Some YI cameras have easily replaced firmware and can do rtsp too, but you have to do your homework on those models to be sure you’re getting one that can be modded.

You’ll still want to (IMO) toss any of them in a vlan without internet access, and rather than provide that vlan access to an NVR on another vlan, I’d lean toward your NVR having a second connection to that vlan. I’m a huge fan of segmentation though, so YMMV.

Unfortunately true. And the reason I personally land with prison is that enough innocent people end up there that I can’t support the death penalty. I actually just referenced a convicted murderer just a bit ago, whose conviction was overturned in no small part due to bad police work.

The best prevention, IMO, has nothing to do with the justice system, and a lot note to do with better social services. Counseling before something terrible and irreversible happens, better support for single parents, or even social workers/police/etc doing their job in this case, would have improved things drastically - a little girl would still be alive.

I can’t think of a better option than that.
