Ooh! I really like how you played with the negative space in this one! The haziness of the background and the way it frames the subject in a hazy aura gives it a real ethereal quality. Our eyes are naturally drawn to faces, so the lack of facial features only accentuates the dream-like quality of the drawing. I like the creepy hands, too! :)

Thanks! The idea of a kelp forest seems so mysterious and pleasing to me.

Something about the combination of the way light refracts through the (relatively) shallow water, the dramatically reduced range of view due to the density of water, plus all the life that these forests can potentially harbor have really appealed to me lately. :)

Ooh, creepy! I love how even with the mask it feels like it’s shooting me a menacing look. :D

Also it lends itself to a bit of pareidolia, I think, with the “bugged out”-looking slightly protruding eyes, the smudge that resembles a nose, and the mouthpiece (minus the filter) that makes it look like a monkey’s face.

    12 monkeys? 🤔

Thanks! The process will vary a bit depending on what I’m doing the figures for, but generally I start with the purpose of the pose.

Sometimes there’s a story or narrative that informs the pose, and sometimes I’m doing the pose to do something else, like costumes or turnaround sheets. I’ll do thumbnail gestures to do variations based on that purpose and pick one or two to expand on. I’ll do a bigger gesture for that, check the balance, fill out the basic forms, and then add or finish little details, like anatomy that sits on top of the basic forms. Then I’ll flip the drawing and check to see if it’s balanced, tweak any details I feel need correction, and then flip it back.

If I’m just noodling around, I start with whatever area of the body seems most important - usually the head or torso - though sometimes I’ll have a specific idea or feel in mind, and I’ll start with whatever part of the pose seems most prominent. Like, the female figure at the bottom right, I thought, “I want a slinky female figure with a hand raised menacingly, as if pointing or casting a spell”, so I started with her raised hand and worked my way down from there.
