I simply don’t get how this even became a question? The conditions should be that if they are within international law it’s allright. And no doubt you are allowed by international law to shoot back when attacked.
This stance from USA is infuriatingly stupid.

“International law” has nothing to do with it. The US doesn’t even recognize international law.

This is solely about not wanting the war to go nuclear. That’s it. They are concerned about Russia launching a nuke and starting WW3. Whether or not you consider that concern valid is a matter of personal opinion.

But with that said, if nukes didn’t exist, NATO would have been in there curb-stomping Russia into the dirt after the first Russian tank rolled across the border.

This is solely about not wanting the war to go nuclear.

Really? Don’t you think I know that? That’s still bullshit, and letting Russia dictate the terms. European countries are widely acknowledging Ukraines right to defend themselves, including striking into Russia. And Russia is of course spewing bullshit about it as usual, calling it escalation to a global war and what not. The truth is the only thing Russia respects is a show of force, that’s how it was with the Soviet Union too, and that hasn’t changed.

Europe is delivering F16 soon that are ALREADY allowed to attack Russia, there is zero reasonable argument to not allow Ukraine to defend themselves properly. It will only embolden Russia, as it already has, by Russia attacking in the northern region now, because Ukraine isn’t allowed to fight back.
Russia is constantly trying to sow fear, and to exploit it. It’s ironic how the worlds greatest military power is acting from fear and not strength!

Finally if there were actually a nuclear strike from Russia, it would most likely be against Ukraine, but despite that Ukraine does not share the doubt USA does.

I’m guessing USA will change policy on this soon, because they are pressured hard by allies.

But in the mean time Ukraine is fighting with one hand behind their back, which is costly to Ukraine currently.

Probably because Putin threatened it. But he also threatens it on basically everyday that ends in a Y… so not sure how credible that threat is.

Maybe if Ukraine could get their hands on some Palestinians, then they could parachute a few of them in at the target location first to get Biden excited about bombing. It seems to work elsewhere.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Mr. Blinken, who returned from a sobering trip to Kyiv earlier this month, reported to the president that the Ukrainians might not be able to hold the territory between Kharkiv and the Russian border unless Mr. Biden reversed himself.

That earlier warning was conveyed privately, in keeping with Mr. Biden’s deep aversion to letting debates among his inner circle leak out and create pressure on him to shift strategy.

But if the president does change his view, it will most likely come with severe restrictions on how the Ukrainians could use American-provided arms, limiting them to military targets, just inside Russia’s borders, that are involved in attacks on Ukraine.

On that point he has some allied support: Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany has refused to provide Ukraine with the German “Taurus” long-range missile system, for fear it could reach Moscow.

“Putin is rattling the nuclear saber to keep Biden from letting U.S. weapons be used to counterattack,” Joseph S. Nye, a former American military official and leader of the National Intelligence Council, said on Tuesday.

One senior administration official said that Washington had conveyed concern to Mr. Zelensky’s government about strikes against nuclear early-warning radar systems inside Russia in recent weeks.
