But what if it had been Trump himself who had been shot away, and only Trump’s ear fragment had been saved by security? Could Trump’s meat ear rim itself have been persuaded to run for the presidency? Could Trump’s ear flesh fragment have beaten Biden in a democratic election? Almost certainly. And would an America governed by a small severed slice of Trump’s ear have offered the world a more secure future than an America governed by Trump, or an America governed by Biden? Again, the answer, sadly, is a resounding yes.

The American Christian right believes that Trump, despite his obvious moral corruption, is a massive tool of a God bent on shaping America into their own twisted theocracy. Evangelical Christian America believes their selectively myopic deity actually intervened to save Trump from the gunman, while leaving a heroic volunteer firefighter to take the bullet. Blessed are the firefighters. But how much more useful to this morally equivocating God is a simple severed ear, unencumbered by accusations that it tried to overturn an election, or paid an adult film star hush money, or stole classified documents, or sexually assaulted a woman in a department store. The ear would be innocent and pure and good, like Jesus, or the unborn child.

And if an ear had, as Trump did, repeatedly socialised with the unsavoury sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his young friends, it is unlikely it would have been able to do anything inappropriate, due to its being an ear. And should the ear be found to have lost the public trust, it could, due to its inability to defend itself or argue its case, be easily dispensed with by the Republicans without too much fuss. Ear today, gone tomorrow.

    heroic

My dude, he was at a Trump rally. Wanting to take away women’s rights, demonizing immigrants, disenfranchising non-white voters, pushing for a white Christofascist ethnostate, increasing taxes on the poor while removing them for the rich, and supporting a criminal who wants to be a dictator (among other evils) more than offsets anything he might have done as a firefighter.

I am not saying he deserved to be shot (because no American does) but he also doesn’t deserve any amount of worship either.

Saw a FB post from him with the “Killdozer” drawing, and the text of ‘Tread on them’. He may have done good work, but that does not make him heroic.

I know Americans like to say “American” instead of “person” all the time, but are you really implying the rest of us deserve to get shot?

Way to put words in their mouth. They said American because it was an American who was shot on American soil.

There is that, I suppose. Would just be nice if this self-centred speech pattern weren’t a thing. I don’t really see it in other English speaking countries, but all the time in US news and media.

Maybe. I am an American, so I don’t have a decent perspective from the outside. I don’t see it here as much, though; at least not outside the MAGA crowd.

Christians always do this shit. “There was a 20 car pile up on the highway today. 8 died, 4 are in intensive care and might not make it. If I hadn’t spilled coffee on my pants this morning and had to change before leaving for work, I probably would have been car 21.” “Wow, God was looking out for you.” And God what… decided to smite the other people? The suggestion that God intentionally saved/spared someone from a tragedy means that God also intentionally didn’t spare those who were in the tragedy. You are implicitly judging those people to have deserved it. To have faced divine justice. I feel like they never think about that very obvious conclusion. Nevermind that it also undermines their belief that humans have free will if God is just tipping over coffee cups and deflecting bullets to manipulate outcomes of life and death.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. You don’t have to feel bad about not helping the poor and needy if God made them that way intentionally

I’ve seen this with “friends” saying that a kid being the only survivor of a plane crash in which there were more than a hundred passengers and crew, is “a miracle and prove that God is great!”

      I unfriended those “friends.”

well duh. prosperity doctorine. for jesus said unto them it is easier for a poor man to walk through the eye of the needle than to get to heaven and blessed are those who are rich in coin for they will inherit the kingdom of heaven as he jumped down from the cross and pulled out a roman guards head and spine before he jumped on his winged unicorn to ascend to heaven.

1, if it was an act of God, it’s just another log on the “if he’s real, he’s an asshole” pile.

2, the Nazi peon who took a bullet intended for Nazi leader is a fucking Nazi, not a hero. Him being dead doesn’t suddenly make him good.

He was a firefighter. While I wouldn’t call him a hero (I think that word gets overused in general), unless he was checking for armbands before stopping fires I think the world is still worse off without that person.

He pitched some buckets of water onto the fire he voted to enlarge.

He may have some small-scale local good, but they’re dwarfed by large scale evil. Any qualities that would have been redeeming went out the window when he got caught in robes at an orange Klan rally.

To be fair, Christians are supposed to believe that all children who die go to heaven unless they weren’t baptized in which case they go to Limbo or Hell (because of Original Sin), depending on whether or not you believe Saint Augustine’s statements on the matter (he’s the one that said they go to Limbo but there’s actually no official stance on it).

The Catholic belief is that a school shooter could kill an entire school full of baptized children then ask for forgiveness right before his death by any cause other than suicide, and everyone goes to heaven. Yay! Super quick shortcut, right?

Don’t some also think it’s proof he is the Antichrist?

Something about the beasts head being mortally wounded but then being completely healed - and the world followed him

It’s maybe not all Christians but there are certainly many evangelicals who will believe literally anything if they feel it advances their goal of bringing about the biblical end of days.

I don’t think they really care if they actually are on the Jesus side of the whole apocalypse. They are happy enough to believe they are, despite categorically rejecting everything about Jesus.

Their thoughts and opinions are literally worthless aside from being dangerous. They don’t believe them outside of a means to advance their goals - but will react with extreme prejudice and hostility if they don’t get their way.

  • I bet that the reason why we haven’t heard anything about Trump’s medical treatment is because he was actually hit by broken glass from a teleprompter. Being grazed by a bullet is more dramatic and makes it easier to dupe his followers with “divine intervention”.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

    Romans 13: 1-2

Of course, in the US, that is only valid as long as the President and Congress are Republican.

You need to go watch the Woody Allen movie Sleeper. Only difference is that it involved the “leaders” nose instead of ear…
