  • Nintendo has been more about innovation in gameplay more than graphics pretty much since the turn of the century, and aside from the Wii U it’s paid off for them pretty well, so why should they change that model? Further, this isn’t like the Wii days in which they got only shovelware or severely butchered versions of 360/PS3 games from third parties: the main difference in many third party Switch games compared to their MS/Sony counterparts is mostly just running at 30 vs 60 FPS with no other major graphical or gameplay changes.

    That said, Nintendo has been blessed to have mostly weak competition in the handheld console market up to now, so also hasn’t felt much pressure from outside in the handheld world until recently. Their handhelds have had quite the long lifespans: the Game Boy lasted from the late 80s to the 2000s before the upgrade to the GBA, and even after the Switch released the 3DS was still seeing relatively strong support until the turn of this decade, putting that at around a nine-year life cycle. I mention this because the Switch for many is as much a handheld as a home console. Now the Steam Deck and similar handheld PCs are giving Nintendo their first strong handheld competition since the PSP (among dedicated gaming machines, I don’t include smartphones). That handheld challenge may also be behind fans’ push for a Switch 2 soon and/or featuring more graphical power than Nintendo may have originally been wanting. But even then, they are mostly best off moving at their own pace and not trying too hard to keep up with the competition. It’s when they have tried to keep up that they hit their lowest numbers compared to MS/Sony, such as the GameCube and the Wii U. When they do their own thing and take the time to get it right is when they are at their best.







  • 2 was the best for actual fighting gameplay, 3 had the best outside content (good campaigns, extra modes, and create-a-fighter with actual unique movesets), IMO. 4 just felt underwhelming (they gutted pretty much everything but a brutally short story mode and arcade ladder and then PVP) and had the real most broken guest characters (the Star Wars characters). 5 is the “black sheep” of the franchise but I actually still enjoyed the short time I had with it, I liked the new characters that weren’t copies/descendants of the old cast. 6 felt mid to me, don’t have much to say about it since I played it even less than 5.







  • +1 for Odysee here. Some give it a pass due to it being a haven for people whose content gets kicked off YouTube, but the same is true for just about any alternative out there, including many instances of PeerTube. With PeerTube you have greater control by being able to self-moderate and federate if you run your own instance, but that takes time, effort and resources you may not have. Odysee has a greater variety of viewpoints and video categories/topics on the front page than many other competitors such as Rumble, which is basically just right-wing YouTube (and IIRC that’s what Rumble is meant to be) and it has a nice balance of enough content to find new stuff to watch every day and not being so overwhelmingly big that you’ll get lost in the vast ocean of content. If you just want to find a place to upload videos, join a PeerTube instance that seems good to you or use Odysee.


  • I think they might wait for an FE4 remake until the next console. Engage had a middling reception and just released last year. FE games generally come out around 3-4 years apart unless they are companion games in the same setting (such as FE4 - 5 (Jugdral), FE6 - 7 (Elibe), and the Wii games (Tellius)), and a 3-year gap from last year will align with FE4’s 30th anniversary, which will likely help it sell in Japan (the novelty of another classic title finally releasing in the West will probably be enough to sell well here). If the Switch 2 releases early next year, 2026 will also be great timing to get enough of a handle on its capabilities to optimize for it well and really give it some good presentational polish.



  • Unfortunately, the free, decentralized nature of PeerTube actually makes it more difficult to be a legitimate YouTube successor. The main reason: monetization. Most of the big creators people watch on YouTube don’t just do their videos as a hobby, it’s a job where they make their living. Some of the biggest will make enough in stream donations or Patron pledges to not have to worry about ads or sponsorships, but there’s a huge “middle class” of content creators, you could call it, who live video ad check to video ad check with Patreon or stream donations being supplemental to the ad revenue. Drop that ad money, and those creators will have to either figure out how to quickly multiply their income from other sources or there would be an extremely sharp drop in both quantity and quality of videos. Expect a ton of much-beloved channels to die in the process. To be any sort of competitor at all while retaining its free, decentralized nature, you would need to have many, many times more instances than exist now, with a large percentage of them run by entities with enough resources to pay for both server costs of hosting and distributing large amounts of content and the cost to pay and support the creators on those instances who previously lived mainly on ad revenue or who want to monetize themselves on the platform. Centralized platforms for video take away many of these issues, or make them a ton easier to handle. They allow for easily setting up a subscription based service such as Nebula that the creators know they will be able to at least count on being steady. It may or may not be a lot, but it’s something guaranteed without the creators themselves also having to worry about paying out in server costs, which is still more in income than PeerTube can offer. What would a creator prefer, some guaranteed income with only their video production costs as overhead, or no guarantee of income while bearing both production and hosting costs?

    EDIT: updated “FreeTube” to “PeerTube”. I absolutely recommend FreeTube, great YouTube client. PeerTube has some potential, but it will never properly compete with YouTube for the reasons I list above. In one word, money.


  • I hear you, it sucks sometimes, especially with Asian-made games/software which LOVE locking themselves to one OS or platform literally for completely random, arbitrary reasons. You can still play them on mobile though. Especially given that you don’t quite want to install a Linux OS on your phone yet (I mean traditional Linux, not Android or a de-Googled Android offshoot) since that’s still largely a work in progress and not ready for primetime yet.


  • I think the Fediverse is an ideal platform on which to experiment with things like this. There will always be a difference here between those who want to see the Fediverse grow into a dominant platform and those who prefer things more quiet. Fortunately, the nature of it means that in this case we can actually have our cake and eat it too. Instances of Fediverse platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy and FreeTube (likely the three that have potential to grow into a significant market share), especially the larger general audience ones, can attract and bring in the high profile users/accounts, such as brands, that can bring in a larger general audience that some current users are looking for, while those who want to keep away from that can move to smaller or more niche instances, or create their own, that can then defederate from the larger instances they don’t want to interact with. People who like aspects of both types of environments can have accounts on multiple different instances, even if those accounts or instances can’t interact with each other due to defederation. Seems like a win-win to me, and part of the beauty of the Fediverse. Don’t like something where you are? It’s easier than anywhere else to move to a different part of it and maintain a presence on the platform overall.

    There were lots of things that impacted how the Saturn sold compared to the PS1. These include things such as its 2D vs 3D performance (it did 2D much better than 3D, which impacted the Japan vs Western sales since the Western market was all in on 3D whereas Japan still had an appetite for 2D games yet), its basis on squares vs triangles for rendering polygons (a major impact to that 3D performance), infighting between Sega of Japan vs Sega of America (the Saturn was developed in Japan to be Sega’s launch into that generation, while the Genesis was still selling well in America, leading to Sega of America pushing the 32X instead, and Sega of Japan forcing their hand on Sega of America and pulling a surprise Western launch of the Saturn, angering devs and retailers who weren’t ready, and leaving Sega of America holding the bag), and the cancelation of what was supposed to be that marquee Sonic game, Sonic X-treme.


  • Fire Emblem delayed their 30th anniversary game by two years. It sat, completed, on the shelf with no real proper explanation as to why. Instead they did a temporary release of the original 8-bit version of the first Fire Emblem on the eShop, when a superior version in essentially every way is available on the DS. If all they were going to do was release an original game on the eShop, the least they could have done was do a worldwide release of one of the games in the series that’s still stuck in Japan. Then the actual anniversary game (Engage) finally released two years later, and… it’s mid. Not bad, especially gameplay wise, but held back by a laughably cartoonish story, especially compared to its predecessor Three Houses. The mobile game Heroes has some better stories than Engage.
